SMD components (Surface Mounted Devices) are components that are soldered directly onto the surface of the printed circuit board (PCB).
They feature an extremely compact design and are the result of ongoing miniaturization in electronic components.
Advantages of SMD-Technology
By soldering directly onto the board surface, the need for through-hole drilling—required for leaded components—is eliminated. Using SMD technology, PCBs can also be populated on both sides, significantly reducing space requirements. SMD technology allows for the removal of connecting wires and further contributes to weight reduction.
